From Guardian (Trinidad) newspaper
Obama, The Caribbean Man
I stand upon the horizon
the wind against my face
renewed, hopeful, inspired
to stay in life’s great race
I listened to Obama
oh, how his stirring speeches touch
I’ve seen him climb his mountains;
just awe-inspiring to watch.
When he became a lawyer
he had options galore,
yet he chose to be different;
he helped the downtrodden, the poor.
In the face of great obstacles,
his self-belief never did quit.
Truly an exemplary leader
the world can identify with.
I can no longer wax poetic
as much as I’d like to do
cause there’s nothing about my Prime Minister
that I can look up to.
He’s arrogant and aloof
he’s all image, he’s all show,
he’s materialistic, he’s out of touch,
his Christianity sounds hollow.
I cannot tell my children
hey, emulate this guy,
nothing he says makes sense
he’s even hard on the eyes.
But not only my Prime Minister
but right across the region
with the exception of Chavez
... just no Caribbean man.
